Last time, I talked about being thankful. If you didn’t catch that point you can find it here

“July 1, 2016 – Be Thankful”

I am thankful for a lot of things. I regularly sit and think about how much I have. It might
sound weird, but I regularly think about my ability to turn a faucet and get clean water.
I don’t have to go far for it at all.

My kids and I read A Long Walk to Water: Based on a True Story by Linda Sue Park.
The book is pretty good. It definitely gives a new perspective to children.

After we read the book, we went for a walk, and I tried to mimic a bit of the distance. I showed
them that we had walked 2 miles, and I asked them what it would seem like if I had asked
them to walk this far to get a jug of water.

They didn’t like this idea.

I told them that once they brought it home to me, they would have to turn around and
walk back to get another jug.

This seemed cruel to them.

It isn’t always feasible to walk a mile in someone else’s shoes; however, we can learn or
experience empathy a little by reading stories. It is one of the aspects of books that are life altering.
