“July 1, 2016 – Be Thankful”<\/a><\/p>\n <\/p>\n
I am thankful for a lot of things. I regularly sit and think about how much I have. It might
\nsound weird, but I regularly think about my ability to turn a faucet and get clean water.
\nI don’t have to go far for it at all.<\/p>\n

My kids and I read A Long Walk to Water: Based on a True Story by Linda Sue Park.
\nThe book is pretty good. It definitely gives a new perspective to children.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
After we read the book, we went for a walk, and I tried to mimic a bit of the distance. I showed
\nthem that we had walked 2 miles, and I asked them what it would seem like if I had asked
\nthem to walk this far to get a jug of water.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
They didn’t like this idea.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
I told them that once they brought it home to me, they would have to turn around and
\nwalk back to get another jug.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
This seemed cruel to them.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
It isn’t always feasible to walk a mile in someone else’s shoes; however, we can learn or
\nexperience empathy a little by reading stories. It is one of the aspects of books that are life altering.<\/p>\n
