L.A. James showcases how she creates fine art paintings in a behind the scenes look.

Behind The Curtain .1

Paintings are stories, and I love stories. I feel a good painting, and a story, can transport
you to a different place in time. When I was a kid, I used to pretend I could hop through a
painting to escape my misery. I imagined what it would be like to step out into this new
space. I envisioned myself leaving all my cares behind. It helped me cope, and it made
me aware of what paintings, and art, people used to decorate their homes, which,
sadly, wasn’t much.

I grew up in Alberta, but my grandparents lived in Saskatchewan. Both provinces are
very big farming communities, and you see a lot of granaries dotting the horizon.
My parents, and a good part of my relatives, were farmers. The significance of a granary
in a community was important, and I tried to capture that in this art piece. The main road,
of a small town, was always closely tied to where the granaries were located. Of course,
the biggest part to this art piece was the sky. I do miss the Albertan sky. It was always streaked
with vivid colors. It constantly changed. It was beautiful, so, for me, the two factors I thought
about when creating this art piece were the granaries and the sky.

The video shows a little bit of my process.

The Process

I am asked how I create my art, and I always have to start with the preface it depends.

Some aspects of my art are created digitally.

Some aspects are painted on a canvas, and I scan in that image to add to my digital work.

Some aspects are created in Illustrator, and I bring that piece into a work.

Some aspects are painted in Photoshop.

Some aspects are painted in Corel Painter.

Some aspects are created with traditional pastels.

Some aspects are created with oil paints.

Some aspects are created with acrylic paint.

Some art pieces are a combination of a few of these techniques.

Some art pieces are a combination of all of these techniques.

I think this might be a new sense of the word Mixed Media, but I enjoy it all.
